What happens when a domain expires

Reminders, grace days and getting an expired domain back.

An expiry should never be a surprise: we email you 30, 7 and 1 day before, and domains with automatic renewal renew by themselves about 14 days earlier (see automatic renewal).

  • Up to 30 days after expiry: you can still renew online from the domain page or Expiring / Expired. The website and email may already be switched off.
  • After that: the domain can no longer be renewed online. Restoring it costs more than a renewal and the rules and times differ by extension. Contact support as soon as you notice.
  • Finally: the registry deletes the domain and anyone can register it.

The full explanation is on the domain expiry and renewal page. Refunding or cancelling an order never changes a domain that is already registered.
